Technical Description:

Student Formula is the largest engineering design competition worldwide, dating bac to more than 40 years ago. The students are tasked with designing and manufacturing their very own formula race car according to the rules mandated by the FSAE. The competition is sub-divided into two categories: Internal Combustion Vehicles and Electric Vehicles. Despite differences in the level of technological difficulty, vehicles of the two groups are often ranked together. The teams compete in both dynamic and static events, with the dynamic tasks including acceleration, skip pad, autocross, and endurance, while the latter consists of design, cost, and business report. This proves that Student formula is more than merely an engineering challenge, it is a collaboration across multiple disciplines. Currently, the competition has stations in industrial leader nations such as the US, Germany, England, and Japan; and NTHU Racing first entered the race in 2016, competing in the ICV category. In 2019, we have officially entered our fourth generation, and each year we’ve strived to make significant leaps in terms of our design and technology. In 2018, we successfully completed two cars, both ICV and EV simultaneously, both of which passed the rigorous inspections and dynamic tasks. More notably, for our electric race car, while most teams utilize commercial battery management systems for their design, we developed our very own system to be integrated onto our race car, which widely gained acknowledgement from the judges and panel members.
In 2019, to follow the trend of future automobile development and to take our technology up a notch, our team decided to focus only on the development of a single EV. We inherited last year’s BMS architecture; modified the frame design to cater to the new battery position; we also improved our battery infrastructure design, improving the overall safety, and also increasing the total voltage by accommodating more battery cores; we completely redesigned the suspension system, distributing the control of the roll and ride motions to respective shock absorbers, enhancing the dynamic performance of the car; we also successfully changed the wishbone into carbon fiber material after rigorous testing to ensure its safety, decreasing the weight of the suspension system but making it stronger at the same time; for our aerodynamics design, we decided against front/ rear wings and added on diffusers instead, gaining significant grip at the cost of no more than 2 kilos of additional weight.
